Carpenter

For 49 Septembers, Mr. Carpenter (Mr. C) welcomed students into his classroom with a smile.

Walter S. Carpenter passed away April 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of learning and compassion. He was more than just a teacher. He was a mentor who believed in every child’s potential. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, principal, friend, coach, and so much more. He was a member of Smithland Baptist Church in Heathsville, Virginia, where he served as a Deacon and a member of the church choir.

He was the son of the late Ethna Kendig Carpenter and Walter C. Carpenter.

Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Stephens Carpenter.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his sister Carolyn Bogdan, daughter Karen Carpenter, and granddaughters Helena and Kacey Amigon, his chiweenie Pinky, and a community of grateful students who will never forget his impact.

A Memorial Visitation was held on April 11, 2026 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Yanaitis Funeral Home, Inc. 55 Stark Street, Plains. A celebration of Mr. C’s life was held at 4 p.m. Service was officiated by his dear friends. There will also be a service held at the Smithland Baptist Church in Heathsville, Virginia. The time and date have yet to be decided.
