This summer First Baptist Church in Colonial Beach extended a help‑ing hand to those in need. Reverend Dr. David Cunningham and others have been getting together to give away locally sourced produce to those struggling to keep meals on the table.

Last Thursday saw two-time NFL champion Torrey Smith host a massive giveaway of school supplies in his hometown, Colonial Beach, at the town park that bears his name. The giveaway, called the Torrey Smith Colonial Beach Book Bag Bash, ran from 5–7 p.m., and for once, the weather cooperated. The sky was blue, the sun was out, but the steamy heat and haze that had plagued the area in the previous weeks were gone, and when the appointed hour came, parents and kids started lining up at the pavilion, stretching down along the park’s edge.
