Yackel retiring from the Haven

After 29 years of service at The Haven Shelter & Services, executive director Patricia “Ellen” Yackel is retiring.
The Haven, a nonprofit that provides advocacy and shelter for victims of partner abuse and sexual assault in the Northern Neck and Essex , first hired Yackel in 1997 as a night manager. Over her tenure, she has served as shelter services coordinator, director of programs, and interim executive director.
The Haven achieved several major milestones during Yackel’s leadership, including completing a capital campaign for a larger shelter facility and opening The Shoppe For Haven’s Sake, a thrift store in Warsaw that generates revenue for the organization.
According to colleagues, what Yackel speaks about most is the staff’s dedication and how, together, they have created a truly trauma informed organization—moving away from the old program directed model in which staff decided what people needed. A trauma informed approach prioritizes listening and allowing clients to lead.
“One of the most important developments during Ellen’s tenure has been that our strategy now includes a focus on the root causes of violence, like historical trauma, cultural disconnection, systemic oppression, and community isolation, through our community garden and other projects,” explained Janet Hemming, former chair of The Haven board of directors.
Heather Brann, chair of the board, praised Yackel’s record of deepening community connections. “One of our most impactful partnerships is with law enforcement in the communities we serve,” said Brann.
Yackel is widely commended for leaving The Haven in a strong organizational and financial position. “She has earned her retirement,” said Hemming.
A celebration of Yackel’s service will be held Thursday, May 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Warsaw Baptist Church, 226 Main Street.
New Appointments
Brittany Clayborne, who began as crisis and support services coordinator a decade ago, has assumed the role of associate director. “Ellen’s guidance has shaped not only our programs, but the way we show all up for survivors and for one another every day. She has taught me so much,” she said.
Diane Varner is onboarding as the new executive director. The Haven said she brings 25 years of nonprofit leadership experience, most recently as executive director of the Richmond area’s Southside Family Connections.
“We spent 18 months planning and conducting our search for the person who would take over from Ellen,” said Wanda Ryan, the board member who chaired the search committee. “After looking at dozens of applications, Diane quickly moved to our short list and we were unanimous in our decision to offer her the position.”
