Westmoreland Takes Action on Gardy’s Mill Pond Dam

In May of last year, a failure was discovered in Gardy’s Mill Pond Dam, where Westmoreland and Northumberland County meet. The Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), which man‑ages the dam, spent the next 14 months conducting community meetings in both counties, getting input from the locals as they pre‑sented some options while putting a notch in the dam that allowed for the free flow of water in order to stabilize the structure. During that time, an online petition called “Help Save Gardy’s Millpond” gained 215 signatures.

Last Thursday saw two-time NFL champion Torrey Smith host a massive giveaway of school supplies in his hometown, Colonial Beach, at the town park that bears his name. The giveaway, called the Torrey Smith Colonial Beach Book Bag Bash, ran from 5–7 p.m., and for once, the weather cooperated. The sky was blue, the sun was out, but the steamy heat and haze that had plagued the area in the previous weeks were gone, and when the appointed hour came, parents and kids started lining up at the pavilion, stretching down along the park’s edge.

Northumberland Board Members Say It’s Time to Make Progress on County Property

The county received a detailed timber pre‑sentation this month, prompting the Board of Supervisors to request that the county attorney bring back information on the process required to move forward should the board decide to take action on timber management. The board also agreed that each month they will make decisions on what to do with the list of county‑owned properties.
