VSP INVESTIGATING TWO FATAL CRASHES IN NORTHERN NECK

Two fatal crashes were reported in the Northern Neck within less than 48 hours over the weekend, with Virginia State Police identifying both victims as out of town residents.

The first crash occurred Friday morning in the Weems area of Lancaster County.

Virginia State Police said troopers were dispatched at 11:47 a.m. to the intersection of Irvington Road and Christ Church Road for a two vehicle crash.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2021 Mercedes Benz GLC300 SUV, driven by Jeffrey William Cole, 71, of Fairfax, was traveling through the intersection from Christ Church Road when it failed to stop at the four way intersection.

A southbound 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 driven by Richard Anderson, 46, of Lancaster, hit the SUV.

Cole was transported to Rappahannock General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police said he was wearing a seatbelt. Cole had a passenger who was not injured.

Anderson, who was also wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.

VSP said speed and impairment do not appear to have been factors in the crash. No charges had been filed as of Monday.

The second fatal crash occurred Saturday night in Westmoreland County.

At 8:12 p.m., troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on Rose Tucker Hill Road involving a 2022 Can Am Renegade 1000R X MR four wheeler.

According to VSP, the ATV was traveling east on Rose Tucker Hill Road, about a half mile west of Tucker Hill Road, when it ran off the left side, hit a tree, and came to rest in the roadway.

The driver, Melvin Jerome Sterling Lawson, 41, of Spotsylvania, was not wearing a helmet and was thrown from the ATV, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.

Investigations into both crashes remain ongoing.
