Northumberland Booster Club praised for contributions

Contributions from the Northumberland Booster Club keep coming, and the difference they’re making isn’t going unnoticed.
At the meeting, the School Board accepted several donations from the Northumberland Booster Club, including $27,728 for NHS baseball and softball scoreboards, $12,235 for NHS gym scoreboards for basketball and volleyball, and $200 toward the Yours Truly photo booth at the NMS spring dance.
Booster Treasurer Allen Garland noted that the funding was made possible largely through donations attracted from generous businesses and members of the community. The scoreboards have been received, he said earlier this month, and the focus was shifting to getting them installed.
At the Board of Supervisors meeting, Garland announced the group had set up a new fundraising effort, this one focused on the elementary school playground. As Northumberland works on the FY27 budget, county and school leaders have been trying to develop a plan to fund the playground, including consideration of a phased approach that would purchase playground equipment over time.
“We understand that the playground fund has been a sticking point for both the county and the school. As a booster club, we’ve opened a separate account specifically for playground donations. I want the board and the public to know that this account is now active,” said Garland.
The Booster Club has set numerous means to accept those donations, ranging from check to Venmo. “I’m the treasurer, and I will ensure every donation goes into the correct account,” Garland told the Board of Supervisors.
Garland also discussed upcoming events to generate funds. “On August 1, we’ll host a sunset cruise aboard the Chesapeake Breeze. We held the event last year, and it was a great time. Tickets will be available soon.
On October 17, the organization will host a golf tournament at Indian Creek, “which we hope will raise significant funds for athletics and clubs in Northumberland County,” he said.
At the School Board meeting, the Chairman, Dr. Dave Curran expressed appreciation for the Booster Club’s contributions.
“I’d just like to say thank you to the Boosters Club. I mean, you guys are just amazing. I don’t know if you’re listening or if you’re here, but the amount of money and funds that you have raised this year is unbelievable, and I just wanted to say thank you.”
At the Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Keith Harris also felt public appreciation was in order. “They need to be congratulated for what they’re doing,” said Harris. “Absolutely outstanding what y’all have started back up and are doing. It’s so appreciated and it’s so needed. Just want to say a heartfelt thank you for what y’all are doing.”
