Letters to the Editor

E ditor Dear Editor, Rob Wittman What Were Ya Thinkin? You voted to pass the “Save Act”. According to Brookings Institute and Heritage Foundation, data indicates that voter fraud is extremely rare in the United States. Some other studies are showing that incidents occur at rates as low as 0.000003% to 0.000096% of total votes cast. So where is the problem?

The “SAVE Act” (a Republican-backed proposal often described as requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections) would not disenfranchise people who are ineligible to vote (non‑citizens). The disenfranchisement concern is about eligible U.S. citizens.

While there may be several groups of eligible voters who may be disenfranchised or deterred totaling several million, this one is perhaps the most egregious.

Married women and others whose legal name doesn’t match their birth certificate will be not allowed to vote. The Act requires strict document matching, people who changed names due to marriage/ divorce/adoption may need additional paperwork (marriage certificate, court order), creating extra cost/time barriers.

So, Rob Wittman, why did you vote to disenfranchises so many?

Are you fixing a problem that does not exist to help a dictator.

Also, you voted “Nay” on the H. Con. Res. 38: Directing the President pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution to remove United States Armed Forces from unauthorized hostilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This resolution directed the President to terminate the use of U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran or any part of the Iranian government or military unless a declaration of war or authorization to use military force for such purpose has been enacted.

So, you are now complicit in the rising prices, economic chaos, death, destruction, discomfort in the Mid East, the hardship for American citizens, and the expenditure of billions of taxpayer dollars. Why were you so callus in your disregard of the consequences that did not have to happen. There was no imminent threat.

In either of these matters you are not representing your constituents! You are fostering a dictator. You are therefore complicit in all of the aftermath. -Jim Knupp, Hartfield Dear Editor, Trump’s Unbridled Racism The Trump presidency’s assault on decency through blatant racism continues.

In previous administrations, the fee to enter national parks was waived on federal holidays. Not anymore. In a racist decision designed to degrade the contributions African Americans have made to this country’s history, on MLK Jr Day and Juneteenth, these parks will no longer be free. But on Flag Day (with legislation pending to rename it “Trump’s Birthday and Flag Day”) they will be free. All this after ordering the removal of African American history and slavery exhibits from national parks.

Last year Trump fired General CQ Brown as Chair of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, Vice Chair Alvin Brown of the NTSB, NLRB member Gwynne Wilcox, and Willie Phillips from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. They were all African Americans and, not surprisingly, they were all replaced by white men. When General Brown was fired, Pete Hegseth claimed it was because he was too “woke” and questioned whether he was in the position because of his race. Hegseth then replaced him with a little known, and less experienced, white man.

During his campaign Trump made disparaging remarks about Somali immigrants in Maine, calling them “garbage”. And we all remember when he referred to Haiti and El Salvador as “s#*thole countries” while asking why we can’t have more immigrants from Norway. Now Trump is asking the courts to void the legal status and protection of immigrants from Haiti while hailing and helping white immigrants from South Africa.
