Man dies in custody at NNRJ

A 60-year-old man died Monday, April 13, while in custody at Northern Neck Regional Jail.

According to NNRJ, the man was transported by EMS to VCU Tappahannock Hospital “after becoming unresponsive.” He was pronounced dead approximately one hour later.

NNRJ Superintendent Michelle Lewis said she could not provide additional details, including the circumstances surrounding the incident, where the man was located, or how staff discovered he needed assistance.

However, Lewis said the death appears to be from natural causes at this time and confirmed that appropriate medical care was provided.

The man’s next of kin have been notified. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, NNRJ is not releasing his name.

He had been taken into custody Saturday and was being held on a Gloucester County charge of trespassing after having been forbidden to do so.

NNRJ said the incident is being reviewed in accordance with jail policy and that the state has been notified as required by regulation.
