Richmond County has hazardous waste events scheduled through 2027
Residents of Richmond County will now have two opportunities each year to dispose of household hazardous waste, as county officials move forward with a newly added spring collection event.
The Board of Supervisors approved a plan to expand the county’s disposal program, which historically offered just one household hazardous waste collection each fall. County Administrator Hope Mothershead received the green light in December to test a second, springtime event after noting that most surrounding localities already host two collection days annually.
Last month, Mothershead announced the county’s first spring household hazardous waste collection has been scheduled for Saturday, April 11. The fall 2026 event will take place Saturday, October 17. Looking ahead, dates have already been secured for 2027: March 13 and September 18.
In addition to expanding the program, the county is adjusting event hours. Previously, collections began at 9 a.m., but Mothershead said it has consistently been observed that residents arrive early and are waiting as crews set up. After consulting with Northern Neck Soil and Water Conservation District staff, they believe residents will benefit from an earlier start time so the county will shift event hours to 8 a.m. to noon. Mothershead noted that participation typically drops off significantly after lunchtime, making the earlier start time a better fit for both residents and event partners.
