County Discusses Closure of Carry-On & Looking Ahead
At the start of the month, news started to filter through the county that Carry‑On Trailer, a business that employed 179 people and was the mainstay of the industrial park to the east of Montross, would be closing its doors. Last Wednesday, the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors gave details of what had happened. Earlier in the month, Chairman Tim Trivett also spoke on the subject to the Colonial Beach Town Council.
Carry-On Shutting Down Montross Plant
Carry-On Trailer’s facility in Montross is preparing to permanently close, according to a notice its parent company, American Trailer World (ATW), submitted to Virginia Works on September 30.

Starting a small business can be an incredibly risky venture. Montross has seen The Gypsy Box and Bunny Burger open their doors for soft openings in recent months. At last week’s meeting, Montross Town Council unanimously voted in favor of helping both busi‑nesses in the form of rent assistance.

Coffee roastery gets conditional use permit in Colonial Beach
At last week’s Town Council meeting in Colonial Beach, a public hearing was held on whether to grant Robert Busick Jr., a town property owner for the past 25 years, a conditional use permit that would allow the construction of a coffee roastery and coffee bar on a property located at the intersection of Wilder Avenue and Washington Street. The location used to be Margaritas Restaurant.
Richmond County approves new business for old Sanders Tire shop
Last month, the Richmond County Board of Supervisors approved a special exception permit allowing #1 Towing & Repair to operate from the former Sanders Tire building in Warsaw, a move some hope will return the long vacant property to productive use.
