To the Editor
To the Editor, Recent reports regarding redistricting efforts across the country should be a cause for concern for every Virginian, regardless of political party. When congressional maps are redrawn without voter approval or oversight, the very foundation of “free and fair elections” begins to crumble.
We are seeing a trend where legislative bodies—from Ohio to Florida—are taking unprecedented steps to manipulate district lines. This isn’t just a political maneuver; it’s a way to diminish the influence of everyday citizens in our nation’s capital. Virginia faces a real risk of following this path if we do not take proactive steps to safeguard our maps.
The amendment on the ballot gives us the power to ensure our representation is a true reflection of our communities. By voting YES by April 21, we can ensure that our elections remain competitive and that our representatives remain accountable to us, not to a party mapmaker.
Sincerely, -Victoria Luna Westmoreland
