Ashburn receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lancaster by the Bay Chamber of Commerce celebrated community leadership and service during its Annual Awards Dinner where Caroll Lee Ashburn was awarded the 2026 Dennis Burchill Lifetime Achievement Award.
At 93 years young, Ashburn remains one Lancaster County’s most dedicated champions. His lifetime of service spans sports, broadcasting, historic preservation and countless community events — all driven by a deep and abiding love for the place he proudly calls home.
Ashburn founded the Kilmarnock Lighted Christmas Parade, created the Northern Neck Sports Wall of Fame and the Music & Arts Hall of Fame, and has tirelessly championed local talent and achievement for decades.
Ashburn still serves as President of the Kilmarnock Museum where he continues to be a steward of local history, ensuring that the stories of his beloved hometown region are preserved for future generations.
Much of his work has been accomplished as a volunteer — a testament to his humility and unwavering dedication to service. Even today, he continues encouraging collaboration, celebrating local successes and bringing people together.
For more than 25 years, Ashburn broadcast high school sports alongside co-host and friend, Demetrius Means. Their work earned both men formal recognition from the Virginia General Assembly, and Means had the honor of presenting Ashburn’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
“I am so thankful for our 25 years and 468 games that we have broadcast together. I was honored to share about Carroll’s broadcasting career and the many programs and activities he has spearheaded within the community,” said Means.
He noted that although Ashburn has retired from broadcasting, his service to Lancaster County continues through the programs and initiatives he still drives. The Dennis Burchill Lifetime Achievement Award is an award he so deserves, said Means.
When accepting the award, Ashburn redirected the spotlight to others.
“There should be at least half a dozen more people standing with me right now,” Ashburn said. “And some of you are here who helped me get this award. Because I couldn’t do it alone.”
Other community figures were also recognized. Rich and Gale Ferraro were named Volunteers of the Year, and Katie Krop of Good Luck Cellars was honored as Business Person of the Year.
