National Kids to Parks Day coming May 16

Kids across Virginia will have a reason to get outside and explore nature later this month–National Kids to Parks Day which returns for its 16th year on Saturday, May 16.

Sponsored by the National Park Trust, this is a nationwide initiative designed to connect children and families with local, state and national parks while encouraging outdoor play, environmental stewardship, and hands-on learning.

All 44 parks within the Virginia State Parks system will participate in this year’s celebration, offering a wide range of kid-friendly programs. From discovering wildlife habitats to learning outdoor skills, parks will host activities that introduce kids to science, history, and nature in engaging, interactive ways.

“Kids to Parks Day is one of our favorite opportunities to inspire children to explore the outdoors,” said Katie Shepard, chief of education and interpretation for Virginia State Parks. “Whether it’s turning over a log to find a salamander, joining a ranger-led hike or playing outside with family, these moments can spark a lifelong connection to nature.”

Events statewide include guided hikes, scavenger hunts, wildlife encounters, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities such as fishing, paddling, and archery. The event could provide a reason to travel to explore a new state park outside the region. But it’s not necessary to leave the Northern Neck since all three local state parks will host special events to mark the occasion.

Northern Neck Activities

Belle Isle State Park

In Lancaster, visitors can take part in a “Butterfly Safari” from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. where participants will try their hand at catching butterflies while learning about their role in local ecosystems.

A park ranger will provide all necessary equipment for this activity at the canoe and kayak launch area. The program blends fun with education, giving children a closer look at pollinators and their importance to the environment.

The standard parking fee applies. No registration is required.

Caledon State Park

In King Geroge, Caledon will offer an “I Spy” wagon ride from 10–11 a.m. and again from 1–2 p.m.

Families will travel down to the river while searching for wildlife such as bald eagles, toads and dragonflies. The guided activity encourages observation skills and introduces participants to the park’s diverse habitats.

Advance registration is required by calling 540-663-3861. The standard parking fee plus a per-person or per-family rate applies.

Westmoreland State Park

In Westmoreland, children ages 8-13 get the opportunity to participate in a free Junior Ranger program that will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring activities like fishing, fire safety demonstrations, a fire-starting competition, and lessons on camping and Leave No Trace principles. The program concludes with a Junior Ranger ceremony led by park staff.
