Mayor explains disappearance of Montross LOVE Sign

Residents and motorists may have noticed that the Montross “LOVE” sign is missing. The reason was explained at last week’s Montross Town Council meeting.

Consisting of a waterman’s boot, an oyster shell, a shark’s tooth, and a wine rack, each letter was a representation of things that attracted people to the Northern Neck.

“After about four or five years, the sign had started to decay,” explained Mayor Joey King. “The first design was made of plywood, so over the years, it’s been decaying bit by bit.”

He said the person the town uses for all the other signs will take a look at it and see what he can do. The plan afterward is to remake the sign out of aluminum and recreate the art just as it was.

“We’ve gotten a lot of positive comments over the years about that theme. I don’t think we want to change that. He won’t charge us for any minor redesigns he comes up with,” the mayor stated.

This is not the only touch-up going on around Montross. During his report, Mayor King noted that Ricky Landon was working on installing a 30-foot light that should be up soon. Equipped with powerful LED lights, it should go a long way toward lighting up the Montross Community Park at night.

“Ricky’s already done the work on the pole,” King noted. “We bought it for an unbelievably good price back at the start of the year.”

When the work on the pole is finished, the line will be buried, and two additional outlets will be added, which should be a huge help to any vendors that set up in that particular location. Finally, there is an idea of placing a camera at the pole as well.

“We’re just working on this in little bits and pieces at a time at this point,” the mayor stated. “People are very interested in and are really enjoying the park. They’re taking their kids out there, having lunch, and the lighting will be really important.”
