Wyatt Bunch takes a cut.

Rappahannock Raider guys’ soccer team took a couple of wins last week tuning up for the Region 1A playoffs coming up in two weeks. The guys’ baseball team moved into first place in the regional standings, and the ladies cemented their top regional playoff spot and the Northern Neck District regular season title in this past week’s play.

Soccer

The guys soccer team took a 5-0 win over Northumberland on Tuesday and followed that up with a 3-1 win over 2A opponent King William. In the Northumberland match, Jay Fisher and Erik Castillo both had two goals, and Christian Patton had one. Castillo also scored twice against King William, with Fisher getting the other.

Guys’ baseball

The guys’ baseball squad got in a strong 3-2 at Northumberland on Tuesday but were rained out on Senior Night last Friday. They will have three games this coming week as they attempt to hold to the region’s top spot for the playoffs beginning the week after. This year’s Northern Neck District race has been one of the closest in modern play.

Monday, the Raiders topped Middlesex in a 10-8 slug fest. Jack Dooley, in two innings of relief, allowed no hits while striking out five Charger batters.

Doing damage from the plate were Slade Keyser with three hits, including a triple, and Landon Schefflein with three hits and two RBIs. Zac Smith had two hits, two RBIS and a home run. Dooley had two hits and two runs scored. Wyatt Bunch had two hits.

On Tuesday, the Raiders traveled to Claraville to face a strong Northumberland Indians squad.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings with the Raiders getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth.  Both Bunch and William Turner singled and later scored. The Indians came back to tie the game in their half of the fourth. The Raiders got the winning run in the fifth on a Zac Smith RBI.

Slade Keyser and Bunch combined on a 15 strikeout game. Bunch had two hits.

Ladies softball

The Lady Raiders softball team kept their undefeated district record intact with a five-inning shutout of the Indians at Northumberland on Tuesday.

In other sports news, Rappahannock graduate, Meredith Slaw, a senior at Virginia Tech, was selected as designated player on the 2022 all ACC softball team. Tech is the regular season ACC champion and will host a regional playoff game.
