The W&L Eagles varsity basketball team recorded two victories this week at home versus the Lancaster Red Devils on Tuesday, January 28 and on the road against the Rappahannock Raiders on Friday, January 31. The Eagles didn’t start the game against the Red Devils like it would be a good night; they totaled nine points in the first period and were down (9-14). They found a rhythm in the second quarter and outscored the visitors (18-14) to be behind (27-28) at half time. A good half time talk got the home team in an offensive fame of mind and they responded with twenty-two points to take a (49-41) lead after three periods. The home team followed the third with an equally impressive fourth; they were up by as many as fifteen points and won (68-59) to hand the Red Devils their first NND loss. James ‘LJ’ Kelly Jr had 20 points, Devy Reed 15 pts, Shane McNeill 15 pts, Brandon Washington 11 pts, Miciah Coleman 4 pts, Tyler Holden 2 pts, and Chris Lee 1 pt. The Eagles were up on the Raiders after the first quarter (15-13). The teams traded baskets the first three minutes of the second period, so the visitors were still up by two points. The Raiders tied the game (19-19) with 5:08 to go before half time. A three-pointer made it (22-19); the next time down the court the Raiders cut the lead to one (22-21) at the 4:10 mark. Both teams scored eleven points to make it (26-24) at the half. The Eagles went up by six (32-26) with 4:48 to play in the third and ahead by nine (35-26) twenty-five seconds later. Rappahannock cut the deficit to five (37-32) then three (37-34) with 2:25 to go. The teams traded three pointers first (40-34) then (40-37) with one-minute left. The home team tied the game (40-40) with 35 seconds to go; a quick four points gave W&L a (44-41) lead. Back to back turnovers gave the Raiders the ball with the clock running down; Korey Gordon pulled up for a 27 foot three and drained it to tie the game (44-44) as the buzzer sounded to end the third stanza. The visitors scored first in the fourth (46-44) then (48-45) with 5:51 to play. The Raiders tied the game (48-48) with 5:20 to go. A (6-0) run gave W&L a (54-48) lead then (56-49) with at the 4:14 mark. The Eagles took their biggest lead (60-49) with three minutes to go then again (62-51) with 2:21 left in the game. W&L would win (72-60).
