The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team traveled to and routed the Essex Lady Trojans on Tuesday, January 14. The Lady Raiders took an early lead after the first period (13-5); they pressured the Lady Trojans and jumped in the passing lanes that turned defense to offense and easy baskets. In the second quarter, their inside and outside game was clicking with Candace Slaw knocking down jumpers and Natasia Fauntleroy using an array of moves in the paint to score most of the teams’ points. The visitors were up (30-11) at half time. The offense continued to roll after the break and increased their advantage to (48-21) at the end of the third period. Running layup drills off long rebounds or steals was making for smooth sailing for Rappahannock. With eighteen more points in the fourth, they had one of their most productive offensive games and a (66-31) victory. Natasia Fauntleroy led the team with 20 points, Candace Slaw 19pts, Brianna Rich 7pts, Demeriah Holmes 6pts, Dayona Jackson 6pts, Eaden Still 4pts, Kayla Packett 2pts, and Nakiya West 2pts. The Lady Raiders were on the road again against the Lancaster Lady Red Devils on Thursday January 16. They were down (9-11) after the first quarter, in what turned out to be a hard-played game. The teams were tied at the half (17-17), so it was still anybody’s game. A strong third period gave the Lady Red Devils a five-point lead (27-32) with eight minutes to play. The visitors could not overcome the deficit and dropped the game (35-38). Candace Slaw had 16pts, Natasia Fauntleroy 11pts, Brianna Rich 4pts, Demeriah Holmes and Dayona Jackson 2pts each. The Lady Raiders went 10 for 22 from the free-throw line in a three-point loss. After press time, Rappahannock will have played at home versus King William on Tuesday, January 21. They will also play Colonial Beach on Thursday, January 23.
