The Rappahannock Lady Raiders basketball team hosted the Riverheads Lady Gladiators in the class A state quarterfinals game at Lancaster High School on Friday, March 6. With a late game deep three pointer from Dayona Jackson to tie the score (46-46) as the clock ticked down to end the game, the teams went to overtime. Nakiya West rebound and put back as the buzzer sounded sent the game to double overtime at (50-50). This was one of the most thrilling games Rappahannock has ever played. They were first on the score board before the Lady Gladiators took a (6-10) lead with 2:12 left in the first period. The Lady Raiders made it a one-point game (10-11) at the end of the first. They went ahead (13-11) early in the second quarter then the team traded the lead (13-14) and (16-14) en route to a four-point advantage (18-14) at the 4:24 mark of the second. A five-point run by the visitors put them up (18-19) with 3:33 to go. The home team was back in front (20-19) then lull in execution gave Riverheads a window to put up nine quick points to make it a (20-28) game with :09 seconds to go in the half. A last second bucket by Eaden Sill cut the deficit to six (22-28) at half time. Rappahannock was back in the game with six points in the third (28-31) then (30-31) with 3:25 to play. The score stayed within two points (33-35) at the 1:25 mark then tied (35-35) with 1:00 to go. The Lady Gladiators were up (35-37) at the end of the period. The home team continued to scrap in the fourth (37-39), (37-43), (41-43) with 3:00 to go in the game. They were down by five (41-46) with 2:37 left. Two free throws pulled the Lady Raiders within three (43-46) with 1:54 to go. Head Coach Ellen Gaines sent the visitors to the free throw line in order to get more possessions. Neither team scored until the clock had ticked down to under twenty-five seconds and Dayona Jackson tied the game (46-46) to send it to overtime. Rappahannock scored first in OT (48-46) with 3:35 to play. Riverheads went up (48-50) after a free throw and :30 seconds left in the game. The Lady Raiders passed the ball around before taking a shot then they all crashed the boards and Nakiya West came up with the ball to tie the game and on to the second OT. The Lady Gladiators scored a big three pointer (50-53) with 2:41 to play and went on to win (52-58). Rappahannock year came to a close with a 20-7 record one of their best. Dayona Jackson had 18 points, Natasia Fauntleroy 12 pts, Brianna Rich 7 pts, Candace Slaw 6 pts, Nakiya West 3 pts, Demeriah Holmes 2 pts, and Eaden Sill 2 pts.
