The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team beat the King and Queen Central Lady Tigers at home on Monday, December 9. The Lady Raiders were first to score and never looked back; they went up (5-0) with 5:44 left in the first period. Their defense kept the Lady Tigers off the scoreboard until 5:00 minutes to go in the first (5-2). The Lady Raiders were first to double-digits up (10-2) with 3:29 to go. The Lady Tigers could only manage six points in the first eight minutes and the home team led (16-6). The teams played a close to even second quarter with Rappahannock still ahead (24-13) at the half. The Lady Raiders doubled up the visitors with a score of (33-16) with 3:53 to play in the third period. They were up by twenty-one (37-16) with 2:38 to go and had a (43-16) lead after three quarters. The Lady Raiders continued to score and play defense to keep their (50-29) advantage with 2:56 to play. They gained a (54-29) victory. In the early stages of the season, the team is still working to get accustom to each other on the court; they need to know where each other is on the court at all times and each other’s weaknesses (who plays best on ball defense, who can receive the ball in motion or do they have to be stationary). With more practices and games, they will score easier baskets, box out and rebound, and create more turnovers. Candace Slaw led the team with 20 points, 6 rebounds, Brianna Rich 9pts, 4rebs, 2ast, Jasmine Kelly 8pts, 4rebs,2stls, 1blk, Demeriah Holmes 6pts, 5rebs, Dayona Jackson 5pts, 2rebs, Natasia Fauntleroy 4pts, 2stls, Nakiya West 2pts, 7ast, 2stls. Rappahannock will play at Mount View on Monday, December 16 and at West Point on Wednesday, December 18.
