The Northumberland Indians harrier team participated last Wednesday in the Region 1A East cross country championships on the William and Mary course in Williamsburg. The guys team took sixth overall with Zach Moore taking a third place to advance to this week end’s Group 1A state championships  in Salem, Virginia. Moore’s third place finish tops his last year’s performance by ten places and places him on the All Region 1A all star team.

Also running for Northumberland were Dustin Perez with a 21:10 time in 25th place; Pierce Delcourt at 21:19 in 28th; Grant Biddlecomb with a 22:14 time and 43rd place; and Tom Neale with a 22;41 clocking and 48th place.

The Northumberland Lady Indians field hockey team advanced to the quarter finals  of Region B, Division 3 tournament. Traveling to Western Albemarle, the number one seeded team, they lost on Monday 8-0.

The very strong and hot shooting Lady Warriors went out to a 7-0 first half lead. The Indians continued to play hard and slowly went back to a defensive stance and held their hostesses to one second half goal. The depth of the Warriors became obvious early with eight different players scoring goals. Offensively, the Indians did move the ball up the wings and had several shots but did not score. Senior Indian goaltender Kendra Jett was credited with fourteen saves.

Coach Mark Fridenstine said of his team’s play, “It was a valiant effort for the Indians who played hard and fought the entire game. I really liked that we battled them the entire game.” He also noted, “It’s been a good three month season and it was fun to see the Indians continue to improve each game.”  Fridenstine’s comments showed the next season may be an even better one for his young squad. They are the only 1A school within the state to participate in field hockey. The varsity ends their season with a 5-11 record, the JVs ended up 2-5-2.
