Last Thursday night, Northumberland hosted the West Point Pointers for their second and final scrimmage before the season begins for keeps. Next Friday night, they will host the Lancaster Red Devils to begin the 2022 season.
In last week’s scrimmage, the Indians had several players back for the first time at the positions where they will probably start the season. In the opening part of the scrimmage, with the clock running, Northumberland outscored the Pointers 24-0.
West Point has the biggest team in size that they have fielded in several years, but the Indians handled them well on both sides of the ball. An obviously pleased head coach Aaron Lewis said, “We played pretty good.” “We need to work on a couple of things,” he added.
Mixing the run and an effective passing game together with controlling the line of scrimmage were the biggest factors in the opening portion of the game that lasted for approximately an hour.
Coming back from a half-time break, the Northumberland staff substituted freely even inserting some prospective JV players. During that time of play, West Point got the formidable single wing attack in high gear. They moved the ball well and in two drives scored 14 points to 8 from the Indians’ subs.
