The W&L Eagles hosted the Essex Trojans and the Northumberland Indians in their final two games of the NND season on Wednesday, February 12 and Friday, February 14. The Eagles took early control and the lead against the Trojans with a (15-10) advantage at the end of the first quarter. In a tightly played second period, the home team extended their lead by one point (32-26) at the half. W&L held a six to eight-point lead throughout the third. The Trojans made a run when the fourth quarter started; they trimmed the deficit to two (47-45) with 6:05 to play. The Eagles refocused and mid-way through the fourth they were up (57-48) and by twelve (60-48) at the 3:27 mark. They would win by double digits (69-57). On senior night, the Eagles fell behind the Indians (0-13) with 3:37 to go in the first; they didn’t score until the 2:30 mark (2-13). It was an uphill battle for the rest of the game. The score was (6-17) after the first eight minutes. They did pull within seven halfway through the second (14-21) and were down by ten (17-27) at the half. Defensive pressure and some turnovers fueled a run to cut the deficit to (23-27) with 6:15 to go in the third. The teams went back and forth but the Eagles were still down after the third period (28-40). W&L made it a six-point game (38-44) with 4:55 to play, five points (41-46) with 4:15 to go, and two points (44-46) with 3:37 left. The score was (45-46) with 3:30 on the clock but the Eagles found themselves down by five (45-50) at the 1:40 mark. The game was tied (50-50) with 1:07 to play, (51-52) with 25 seconds showing, and (51-53) with only 11 seconds left. Shane McNeill drove to the basket for a layup and tied the game (53-53). The game went to overtime and the Eagles found the offense they had been searching for to go up by eight (61-53) their biggest lead of the game; they won (69-58). James ‘LJ’ Kelly Jr had 21 points, Shane McNeill 13 pts, Brandon Washington 13 pts, Devy Reed 7 pts, Brian ‘BJ’ Johnson Jr 7 pts, Kenneth Turner 6 pts, and Miciah Coleman 2 pts. W&L will travel to the Colonial Beach Drifters for the semifinal round of the NND playoffs on Wednesday, February 19.
