People tracking the progress of the County Bridge Road project may have noticed what appears to be a standstill. Work has been suspended and won’t resume until July due to environmental restrictions that bar VDOT from creating disturbance in Cat Point Creek.
The time-of-year restriction that’s underway is designed to protect anadromous fish populations, which in Virginia, include species like herring, American shad, striped bass, and Atlantic sturgeon, noted VDOT communications manager Kelly Hannon.
These fish typically migrate from the ocean to freshwater rivers and streams during the spring and early summer to spawn. These migrations are seen in the James, Rappahannock, and Potomac watershed, and require clean and oxygenated water with suitable temperatures and minimal disturbances from human activities.
According to VDOT, despite even their best efforts, activities like pile driving and cofferdam installation sometimes disrupt the river bed and can reduce water quality in these watersheds, disrupting migratory patterns. Hence, the restriction. And there are no construction activities to be completed at this point in the project that are guaranteed to be non-disruptive.
This restriction and work suspension were factored in. And according to VDOT, the contractor was ahead of schedule when work stopped. So, this pause will not have any negative impact on the timeline for completing the project. The new bridge is still slated to open in February 2024.

An important economic indicator, the country’s rental vacancy rate—or the measure of rental homes that are vacant in a given area—signals the balance between supply and demand for rental homes. When the rate is relatively high, it indicates an abundance of available rental properties, which typically places a downward pressure on rent prices. Unfortunately, the rental vacancy rate in the U.S. is the lowest it’s been since the mid-80s—and as a result, competition over available units is fierce and prices are historically high. Many renters have no choice but to designate more and more of their income to rent, having less to spend on critical needs like food or healthcare—and being unable to save for life events like reducing debt and planning for retirement or family goals. To determine the locations with the highest rental vacancy rates, researchers calculated the percentage of rental homes that were unoccupied in Q1 2023, then ranked metros and states accordingly.

Walking is easy to fit into your daily routine and offers a variety of health benefits to people of all ages and fitness levels. However, if you are looking for a slightly more intense workout, consider making the following changes to your daily walk. Doing some stretches and a quick warmup before your walk is a great way to demand a little bit more from your body. Walking usually only exercises your lower body. Carry some light dumbbells with you to challenge your upper body as well. Strapping on wrist weights is a good idea, as they’ll leave your hands free. Walking on an incline is a great way to target your glute muscles and add variety to your walk. Adding some simple exercises throughout your walk is a great way to burn more calories. Floodwaters from a collapsed dam kept rising in southern Ukraine on Wednesday, forcing hundreds of people to flee their homes in a major emergency operation that brought a dramatic new dimension to the war with Russia, now in its 16th month.Amid the disaster response, artillery shelling rang out as people scrambled to get out of the danger zone, climbing onto military trucks or rafts.A day after the dam's collapse, it remained unclear what caused it. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the dam wall, while Russia blamed Ukrainian shelling for the breach. Some experts said the collapse may have been an accident caused by wartime damage and neglect, although others said this was unlikely and argued that Russia might have had tactical military reasons to destroy the dam.The flood's force was expected to slacken as the day wore on, officials said Wednesday, but water levels were expected to rise by another 3 feet over the following 20 hours and engulf more downriver areas along the…

Chris Licht, the embattled CEO of CNN, is out of the company, effective immediately. The news comes less than a week after Licht was the subject of a devastating profile in The Atlantic. The 15,000-word article portrayed him as an ineffectual leader presiding over a "meltdown" at the news organization. Licht took the reins of CNN last year after the network's then-parent company, WarnerMedia, merged with Discovery. Licht was hired by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and arrived with a mandate to make CNN more middle-of-the-road in its coverage. In a staff meeting Zaslav told CNN employees that Licht would be leaving CNN. I met with Chris and he will be leaving CNN. ... For a number of reasons, things didn't work out, and that's unfortunate. It's really unfortunate. And ultimately, that's on me, and I take full responsibility for that. But now we begin a new page. This is an extraordinary organization, said David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO.
