If the progress on the lot near the library in Montross is any indication, it will soon have its first true modern park, possibly even in time for when First Fridays events roll in this summer.
Unveiled in June of 2021, the idea was to convert the unused lot next to the Montross branch of the Rappahannock Regional Library into a nice little park for the benefit of the public. Once the playground equipment, sidewalks, and pavilions are installed, the town will have a plot of land that can be used for anything from yoga in the park to a music venue.
The whole thing was started as a plan cooked up by a college student for a project. Mayor Terry Cosgrove, in turn, decided to see if he could turn it into a reality. The original plans were even more ambitious, even calling for a small amphitheater in one of the wooded gullies nearby.
The County leased the land to the Town, and from that point on, the Town saw to getting donations and grants to help pay for the park and everything they had planned for it. The biggest step to be completed recently was the playground equipment coming in.
“It’s coming together nicely,” Vice Mayor Joey King commented during the most recent meeting. “The kids can’t wait for it.”
At present, the electrician is finalizing things and seeing what needs to be done. Once everything is in place, talks will be held with the Library and Master Gardeners about potential partnerships. All told, Montross’ first park of this nature is shaping up quite nicely, and it won’t be long before it’s properly opened up to the public.
