The Rappahannock Lady Raiders varsity basketball team used the win and advanced mentally to run off three victories versus the Chincoteague Lady Ponies, the West Point Lady Pointers, and the Lancaster Lady Red Devils to win the class 1 Region A Championship at Lancaster High School on Friday, February 28. They doubled up the Lady Ponies and it began in the first period with a (20-10) lead. Their defense sparked the second quarter by only allowing two field goals and six points to be up (39-16) at the half. The dominance continued into the second half with a (17-9) period to make the score (56-25) after three. The Lady Raiders cruised to a (62-30) victory to advance to the regional semi-finals. Dayona Jackson had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assist, 3 steals, Brianna Rich 13 pts, 5 reb, 1 stl, Candace Slaw 10 pts, 4 reb, 3 stl, 3 blk, Demeriah Holmes 10 pts, 2 reb, 5 stl, Eaden Sill 5 pts, 4 reb, Reagan White 4 pts, 2 ast, 2 stl, Natasia Fauntleroy 4 pts, 3 reb, 2 stl, and Kayla Packett 1 pt, 2 reb. The Lady Raiders met the Lady Pointers on Wednesday, February 26. The defense turned up again to go into the second period ahead (9-6). They applied more pressure in the second to hold the visitors to four points and go up (20-10) at the half. The teams played even in the third stanza to make it (30-20) after three quarters. The home team coasted to another victory behind a (13-10) fourth to make it (43-30) and moved on to the finals. Brianna Rich had 14 pts, 5 reb, Dayona Jackson 12 pts, 2 reb, Nakiya West 9 pts, 2 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk, Demeriah Holmes 3 pts, 3 reb, 2 stl, Reagan White 2 pts, 1 reb, Natasia Fauntleroy 2 pts, 3 reb, 1 stl, and Candace Slaw 1 pt, 8 reb, 1 stl. Rappahannock was on the road for the regional finals against a familiar foe the Lancaster Lady Red Devils. They had defeated the Lady Red Devils a week prior for the NND title and this would be the fourth meeting of the season. As needed the defense came to play and made it a (10-5) game after the first period. The next eight minutes was similar to the first and the visitors went up (21-12) at half time. In one of their best quarters of the season, the Lady Raiders held the home team to two points in the third period to be up (34-14). They went on to win (43-26) the biggest margin of victory over Lancaster this year and it came in the championship game. Candace Slaw had 16 pts, 13 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl, 4 blk, Dayona Jackson 7 pts, 1 reb, 2 blk, Natasia Fauntleroy 6 pts, 1 reb, 1 stl, Nakiya West 4 pts, 1 reb, 3 ast, Demeriah Holmes 4 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, Brianna Rich 4 pts, 9 reb, 3 stl, and Eaden Sill 2 pts, 1 reb. Rappahannock will face the Riverheads Lady Gladiators in the class 1 state quarterfinals on Friday, March 6 at Lancaster High School.
