There are some matters that county leaders need to start giving some serious thought to Lancaster Supervisors Bill Lee and Bill Smith told fellow board members.
Lee noted that housing issues are a problem across the Commonwealth. “We’re sitting on 150 acres that the county owns off of Good Luck Road. What I’d like for you gentlemen to start thinking about, seriously, is that the county provide the water and sewer up to that property.”
Lee said there was already a cost estimate and preliminary studies provided when the land was purchased. That was in 2017 but they could at least use it as a refresher to get a base idea of what they are working with. But he proposed the board take it further by also getting updated costs and adding the project to the next capital improvement budget in hopes of enticing a developer.
Lee said the county could partner with the developer to start a mixed-use development on that property that could ultimately provide housing for people looking to move to the county and for the workforce that’s already here.
It’s a matter that needs to be treated with a sense of urgency because housing is definitely a problem.
Supervisor Jason Bellows said that’s also another potential site for offering public access, which is an effort that board is currently working on.
Meanwhile, Supervisor Smith said he spoke with a physician this month who informed him that there’s a local practice that cannot attract a doctor. One problem was the lack of housing at the right price. The other issue, he said, is the lack of an attractive salary.
“Doctors work hard, study hard, and they deserve to make money. But we’re having trouble bringing doctors here. It’s something that I think this board needs to start thinking about as well.”
Asking what county leaders can do to entice doctors and much needed professionals to the area is something we have to take serious, he said.
