Last Friday, Delegate Margaret Ransone officially announced she won’t be running for re-election when her term ends in January 2024.
Ransone, who took office in the Virginia House of Delegates in 2012, didn’t elaborate on her reason for leaving or any plans that lie ahead. She did, however, note that her family is looking forward to spending more time together.
“Representing our cherished Northern Neck, King George, and Caroline Counties has been a great honor. My love for community will never change,” Ransone stated.
In addition to a list of boards and commissions she worked on, Delegate Ransone served as Chairwoman of Privileges and Elections; a member of Courts of Justice, Commerce and Energy, Agriculture, Chesapeake and Natural Resources; and the Rules committees. And it doesn’t appear that her time in the Virginia legislature went unnoticed or unappreciated.
Ransone used her Facebook page to share the announcement that this would be her last term. The comments on the post are overwhelmingly from people thanking her for her service and the representation she has provided for the Northern Neck.
Among those voicing appreciation are local leaders; including Colonial Beach Mayor Robin Schick, Westmoreland Supervisor Timothy Trivett, and Warsaw Mayor Randy Phelps. Organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Neck, thanked the delegate for her support.
Kent steps forward
The same day that Ransone made her announcement, another Northern Neck native came forward announcing that she was looking to fill Ransone’s role. Hillary Pugh Kent, from Richmond County, is a self-described conservative whose campaign website includes the tagline “faith, family, freedom and hard work.”
Kent’s messaging thus far shows commonalities between her and Ransone, including that both showcase that they are businesswomen, and they both are supporters of limited government.
As a mother to three boys, a wife, and a businesswoman, I am determined to continue the strong conservative leadership from our gateways of the Rappahannock throughout the entirety of the Northern Neck,” said Hillary Pugh Kent.
Kent said she is running “to preserve common-sense, conservative representation.” She committed to “continue to fight to protect parental rights and families, provide the funding and resources necessary for law enforcement at all levels, and work to promote policies that promote small business and restrict unnecessary government intrusion that stifles economic growth and initiative.”
“During the pandemic, we all witnessed what happens when government is handed the reins. As Thoreau said, ‘That government is best which governs least,’” said Kent in the announcement about her candidacy.
Kent said she holds a Masters of Public Administration from VCU. Her community involvement reportedly includes co-founding the Warsaw-Richmond County Main Street Program, being on the boards of the Richmond County YMCA and the Lewis Ledwith Free Clinic, and serving as a youth group leader at Cobham Park Baptist Church, which she attends.

Hadassah-University Medical Center has developed a treatment for multiple myeloma cancer that is 90% effective. The treatment is called CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy). The CAR-T treatment harnesses the patient's own immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. Previously, patients diagnosed with the disease had a life expectancy of only two years and it was thought to be incurable. However, now more than 90% of the 74 patients treated at Hadassah experienced complete remission. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of production and treatment, only one patient per week can currently undergo the therapy. The positive response rate and minimal side effects in the treatment provide hope for patients suffering from the disease. The current goal is to commercialize the treatment and obtain FDA approval within a year.

Under Venice’s Rialto Bridge, authorities are investigating a patch of fluorescent green water that has appeared. Luca Zaia, Veneto regional president, shared that an urgent police meeting has taken place and water samples were extracted. Zaia noted that no radical environmental groups have come forward, and CCTV of the area is being carefully reviewed. Authorities have also asked local gondoliers and boat drivers if they had seen any suspicious activity around the area. When the luminous blob in the water was first noticed, it began to slowly grow as gondolas and boats skimmed through. The activist group Ultima Generazione, who recently poured charcoal into the Trevi Fountain in Rome, told CNN that “it wasn’t us.” Many theories have been circulating online, including the possibility that it was algae or an illegally disposed substance.
