Bay Aging and Bay Transit staff teamed up with the management of Tappahannock Greens Apartments to deliver forty bags of shelf-stable groceries to the residents of the Essex County apartment complex.  Tappahannock Greens Apartments provides low income housing to the elderly, age 62 and over, and to the disabled or handicapped, age 18 and over. “We are so thankful that Bay Aging helped out our residents during these very difficult times,” said Debbie Beach, Manager of Tappahannock Greens. “Some of our residents rely on Bay Transit for transportation to the grocery store, but it can still be difficult navigating inside the store and maintaining social distancing from other shoppers.  Bay Aging made it easy and safe for our residents to get much needed groceries.”

Jennifer Beck, Bay Aging’s Director of Community Living Programs, and Larry Chatham, a Bay Transit bus driver who loves volunteering, were on the Bay Transit team that delivered the groceries. “We have seen substantial increases in Meals on Wheels enrollment, Helping Neighbors enrollment, and requests for shelf-stable groceries throughout the COVID-19 crisis,” Beck noted.  “It’s a great time to be working for an organization that has such an impact on the communities we serve.”  Mr. Chatham added, “It makes you feel great when you see the smiles on people’s faces when you have an opportunity to help out.  That’s one of the reasons I love volunteering.”
