Five seniors graduating this year from Northumberland High School have received scholarships from Historic Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern in Heathsville.
As a result of COVID-19 health restrictions, the Tavern Foundation regretted that the checks could not be handed out in person at the customary Senior Recognition Recognition Night. Recipients were each mailed $500, which will be used for college expenses.
This year’s scholarship winners from the Class of 2020 included Nigeria Ball, Taylor Basye, Randy Brooks, Anna Jett, and McKensey Smithart.
Nigeria Ball has aspirations towards a career in law. She was active in Beta Club and is noted for her excellent leadership skills. She plans to attend the University of Mary Washington.
Taylor Basye will be attending Virginia Tech with a long-term goal of becoming a large animal veterinarian. She participated in various sports and was active in the Beta Club. She has engaged in community service at the Northumberland Animal Shelter, the Fisherman’s Museum, and the Northumberland Little League.
Randy Brooks is planning to attend Ferrum College to study Physical Education and Forestry. He has a love of the outdoors and hopes to pursue a career in nature conservation or ecology. He has participated in athletics, is active in his church and works part-time.
Anna Jett was a participant in the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School and will be attending the University of Virginia. She will be specializing in Environmental Science. She has been the president of the Beta Club and received numerous awards for academic excellence.
McKensey Smithart was a student in the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s Schools. She plans to attend the University of Mary Washington to study anthropology and minor in biology. She has been on the school soccer team all four years and was Captain in her senior year. Also an artist, she has received awards for photography and pencil drawing.
