Congratulations to Rappahannock High School English teacher, Mr. Grover Cleveland Winfield III, on being selected to present at the 2022 National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention: !Suenos! Pursuing the Light! in Anaheim, California.
Mr. Winfield participated in two poetry presentations as a contributing member of #TeachLivingPoets, which was founded by Melissa Alter Smith, an English teacher from Lake Norman Charter High School in Huntersville, North Carolina. During the first poetry presentation entitled #TeachLivingPoets: New! Hands-On Activities and Collaborative Strategies That Nurture Student Engagement with Poetry, Mr. Winfield introduced his poetry activity, “Word Play with Song Titles/Album Titles & Pop Culture References,” and he recited a teacher model entitled “Maintaining,” a rap that he wrote as a way to pay homage to his favorite Hip Hop MC, Common, by including all of the song titles from Common’s second Hip Hop album entitled Resurrection.
Afterwards, attendees were invited to participate in an abbreviated writing and sharing session where educators developed poetry/song concepts and wrote poems, raps, or spoken word selections highlighting the song titles and/or album titles from various music artists or musical groups. For the second poetry presentation, Mr. Winfield served as the host for #TeachLivingPoets: “Keep the Fire. See by It,” Featuring Poet Tim Seibles, the former Poet Laureate of Virginia. During this presentation, #TeachLivingPoets paid homage to Tim Seibles as a light in the world of poetry. Tim Seibles gave a reading from his new and selected collection of poetry entitled Voodoo Libretto, and Seibles provided valuable advice on how students and educators can explore and gain confidence in writing and studying poetry.
Mr. Winfield received positive comments from his fellow educators in #TeachLivingPoets as well as from some attendees at the NCTE conference for his roles in both poetry presentations. Mrs. Dana Fox, assistant principal at Rappahannock High School, accompanied Mr. Winfield to the NCTE convention and provided him with some moral support during his presentations on Saturday, November 19th. Richmond County Public Schools and Rappahannock High School are proud of Mr. Winfield for being selected to present and for representing the school division at a national conference.
